Couples' Clinic

The Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy treats couples from many backgrounds: from those of us in long-time partnership to those in the newer phases of relationships.  Whether the couple be dating, engaged, partnered, married, separated, or considering divorce, couples therapy can help to increase effective communication, increase receptivity to each other, improve trust, and facilitate co-parenting strategies when necessary.  We work with a variety of issues that may be affecting your relationship; the list on the right hand side of the page displays a few of the common problems seen at our clinic.

 Common Problems for Couples:

  • Communication Problems
  • Sexuality/Sex-Related Issues
  • Alcohol/Substance Abuse
  • Transition to Having Children
  • Work-Related Stress
  • Pre-Marital Counseling
  • Early Parenthood
  • Coping with Illness and/or Disability
  • Divorce
  • Re-Marriage
  • Culturally-Based Issues for Couples Identifying with Marginalized Groups
Who can benefit from couples therapy?
We work with clients from all different cultures, religions, age groups, ethnic backgrounds, gender identifications, physical abilities, and sexual orientations.

Our staff are well trained and have ample experience in working with couples.  We also have experienced trainees, either pre- or post-licensed, that may be choosing a specialty in this area.  A partial list of the approaches that our staff employs are the Gottman Method Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. Each couple is treated for their individual needs.
